An unlabelled form field is announced to a screen reader as "edit text" and nothing else. The user cannot tell whether it wants their name, their email, or their postcode.

This is the defect most likely to cost you money directly, because it sits on contact forms and checkouts — the pages where visitors were trying to give you their business.

Placeholders are not labels

The most common cause is a form styled with placeholder text instead of visible labels. A placeholder is not a label: it is not reliably announced, it vanishes the moment the field receives focus, and it typically fails contrast requirements. If your form looks clean because the labels were removed, this scan will find it.

A field is properly named by a <label for> tied to its id, by a wrapping <label>, or by aria-label. This checker accepts all three and only flags fields with none of them.
